Asia would be hit harder by a second global crisis

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A new global financial crisis would hit Asia harder than the last one, especially nations heavily exposed to offshore markets or still repairing budgets from the 2008-2009 crisis, credit ratings agency Standard and Poor's said on Monday.
The agency, which incurred Washington's wrath at the weekend by cutting its AAA rating by a notch to AA+, said it was not predicting a rerun of the credit crisis that crippled markets and tipped the world economy into recession three years ago.
But it warned of more sovereign downgrades in Asia next time around, if its assumptions turned out to be wrong.
"If a renewed slowdown comes, it would likely create a deeper and more prolonged impact than the last one," S&P said in a statement.
"The implications for sovereign creditworthiness in Asia-Pacific would likely be more negative than previously experienced, and a larger number of negative rating actions would follow. We wait to see."
S&P said it assumed Europe's debt crisis and Washington's debt problems were unlikely to lead to "abrupt dislocations" in the financial systems and economies of major developed nations.
On that basis, it added, its historic downgrade of the U.S. credit rating would have no immediate knock-on impact on sovereign borrowers in the Asia-Pacific.
It cited the Asia Pacific region's sound domestic demand, relatively healthy corporate and household sectors, plentiful external liquidity and high savings rates -- though it listed New Zealand, Japan and Vietnam as exceptions to this.
The S&P statement took on a much darker tone when considering the possibility that its assumptions were too rosy, noting that Asia still relied heavily on exports to the West.
"Given the interconnectivity of the global markets, an unexpectedly sharp disruption in developed-world financial markets could change the picture," it said, noting that the U.S. and European economies could again contract or stagnate.
"In this scenario, the experience of the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 shows that export-dependent economies with large exposures to the U.S. and/or Europe would feel the most pronounced economic impacts," S&P said.
"It's not likely things would be very different this time."
The agency listed those countries particularly vulnerable to disruptions in offshore capital markets as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Indonesia.
It also said several nations, again including New Zealand, were also still repairing their government finances and could be more constrained in responding to a fresh global crisis.
"The adverse impact on Asia Pacific in that scenario would likely require governments to use their balance sheets to support their economies and financial sectors once again," S&P said.
"And in our opinion, most governments would promptly oblige. But some of them continue to bear the scars of the recent downturn -- the fiscal capacities of Japan , India, Malaysia, Taiwan and New Zealand have shrunk relative to pre-2008 levels."

Sathya was sitting on the bench and staring at nowhere in particular. She seemed to be lost in thought. Roshni went over, "Hey gal, wassup? You're okay?" The staring at nowhere now turned to Roshni's face and continued.
This was weird. Last evening when she came out of the boss's cabin Sathya was walking as if she had springs fixed to her shoes. She could not stop laughing and joking. The news of her promotion and incentives was the talk of town. However, seems like, Sathya had just slept away all the happiness over night.
Over a cup of tea Sathya opened up to Roshni on what had happened at home the previous evening.
As she stepped into her home, Sathya had gone to her mother in law who was watching TV. "I got a bonus for my performance last year," she softly told her. Her mother in law was thrilled. She hugged Sathya and asked her what she planned to do with the money.
Sathya said, "Invest it somewhere safely. I am thinking of putting it in a bank deposit. Now interest rates have also gone up. I just met the bank manager on my way"
Her mother in law said, "Okay, but did you think about buying gold. The price of gold is going up and I was just seeing some channel where they say gold price will touch the 2000$ an ounce very soon. In my experience gold prices have never fallen. In any case, you have to buy gold for Nidhi (Sathya's daughter). You should buy that diamond necklace we saw last week".
Sathya thought about it, but was not convinced, "Yes mummy, but gold is just a dead investment. It does not earn any income or interest. In addition, what is the point in buying jewellery for Nidhi now? Fashion may change when she grows up".
"May be Sathya, but whenever you can, you should buy gold and safe keep, then you won't have to struggle when Nidhi is ready for marriage. Also what interest do these fixed deposits give? Inflation rates are even higher. Experts say that we are actually losing money investing in fixed deposit", she was speaking from her newly acquired knowledge from watching stock market based TV channels.
Oh! Sathya did not like the idea of safekeeping gold. It was a painful task going to the bank with a key and standing there in the queue to take out and keep your jewellery back in the locker. In addition, the locker costs money and the bank wants some deposit to allot you a locker. However, mom in law was right about inflation rate being almost same as bank interest rate. Sathya was getting confused.
Just then, Sathya's father in law came in overhearing their conversation. Sathya got up and shared with him the official letter. He was overjoyed and said, "Sathya this is great news. You should buy that piece of plot in the suburbs. There are some developers who are creating these land banks and if you invest in them they will give you amazing returns."
She did understand that land was a great investment. Nobody was producing land anymore so the demand is only likely to go up. It is a sure shot way to build wealth. However, she had heard from her friend about pieces of land in the suburbs being occupied by the locals who refuse to leave, of the government taking over the land for building road etc. She was getting really confused now.
Her father in law continued, "Beta, it was only lands that helped me send my son to college and get my daughter married off. Bought at cheap rates, they came in handy when I needed the money. However, you do what you think is the best. Good luck" and he walked off.
In some time, Sathya's husband Suraj walked in. When she told him, he said, "Oh wow Sathya, I am so proud of you. You know what? We should just invest the money. The stock markets have corrected and prices of most stocks in my target list are very attractive. We should invest the money in stocks. We did open a demat account in your name, right? Is it still active?" Now, this was the last thing Sathya wanted to hear. One more suggestion for investments and she would start crying.
On the other hand, Sathya was paranoid about stocks. She had seen markets fall to half the previous levels. She has also heard many horror stories about people losing their hard-earned money. She did not intend to become part of those stories now. She said, "Suraj, but stock markets are risky. I could lose all my money and I don't understand it well".
"Baba that way, everything is risky. Can you say your fixed deposit is absolutely risk free? Banks / companies can also default and you are insured for only upto Rs.1 lac. Nothing fluctuates more than gold prices these days? How sure can you be about the land you buy, the credibility of the documents or the price that you pay? Every investment has some risk or the other", explained Suraj. "If you are so scared of the stock market, invest through mutual funds no. That way, it is easy and you can at least be assured that some expert is dealing with your money in the share market. You can earn tax-free dividends. Many people become rich because they invest in stocks", he added.
This was not helping Sathya at all. Her head was hurting. What did she do?
Now, this is what it was. Roshni gave her friend an understanding look and suggested they write down all that they knew and see if it made sense. So, they pulled out a napkin and wrote down...

Roshni went through it again and said, "Very good Sathya, we have done a great job in finding out that no investment is very good. All investments are good in some way, but are bad too in some other way. Just like all of us. You know what? You should just spend it, mast karo. Go on a holiday, buy new clothes, jewels, shoes. Enjoy it yaar, it is your hard earned money".
"Very funny", said Sathya "I know what to do. I am going to meet somebody who can help me". She remembered one her colleagues mention a financial planner. She fixed an appointment and met with the planner.
This planner explained that she need not really put all the money in any one of the above options. She can actually distribute her money in all the above options to get the benefit of all. That way she also does not have to suffer the drawbacks of any one investment option with all the money. She can "spread the risk". That is what the planner said.
Okay, but how do you decide how much in each investment option?
This was a good question.
The planner pulled out a paper and handed it over to Sathya. He said, "Take a few minutes, think about it and write "What is that you ultimately want to do with this money". I know you want to invest the money. Invest it now so that you can use it later right? So, what will you use it for later? Write down all things in your mind that you want to use this money for" and he left the room.
Sathya thought about it and wrote "I want to invest now so that we have enough money for Nidhi's education and marriage. Our parents are growing old. We want to have some money for any medical emergencies. When we retire, we want to have enough money to take care of ourselves."
The planner walked back into the room, sat down with Sathya and went through her "Want to" list.
He said, "Instead of looking at which investment is the best, which will give highest returns, which will help me save tax etc. look at investments from another point of view. Which investment will help me check off all the items on my "Want to" list. Which investment will help me reach my life goals? Which is the most suitable for me?"
Sathya seemed to be getting some clarity. The planner drew out a detailed plan to invest her money. He suggested that a portion of the money go into fixed deposits for parents' safety and emergency needs. Some money should go into mutual funds and some in gold for Nidhi's future. He also suggested that they set aside some money for down payment of their second home. He wanted them to also start a regular investment plan as this sum alone would not be sufficient. He drew out a goal based investment plan that will enable Sathya and Suraj actually do all that they "want to" do in their lifetime.

Latest figures from the US Treasury Department show that the country has an operating cash balance of $73.7bn (£45.3bn).
Apple's most recent financial results put its reserves at $76.4bn.
The US House of Representatives is due to vote on a bill to raise the country's debt ceiling, allowing it to borrow more money to cover spending commitments.
If it fails to extend the current limit of $14.3 trillion dollars, the federal government could find itself struggling to make payments, and risks the loss of its AAA credit rating.
The United States is currently spending around $200bn more than it collects in revenue every month.
Apple, on the other hand, is making money hand over fist, according to its financial results.
In the three months ending 25 June, net income was 125% higher than a year earlier at $7.31bn

Stinking giant a hit in Basel

The rare blooming of a giant flower, taller than a man, that stinks of carrion, has been drawing thousands of visitors to Basel University’s botanical garden.

The only previous time a titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum) produced a flower in Switzerland was 75 years ago. World-wide, there have only been 134 recorded instances of cultivated plants blooming.

The nearly two-metre tall flower opened on Friday evening. The flower started to poke out of the soil in March, and in the past few days it had been growing at the rate of about six centimetres a day. But before then it had taken 17 years for the corm to grow to 20kg and to reach the blossoming stage. It will start wilting on Saturday evening or Sunday. Its mother plant last bloomed in the Frankfurt Palm Garden in 1992.

The gardens expect some 10,000 people to come to see it and are remaining open for at least 24 hours while the flower lasts. The event is also being filmed on webcam. On Friday, the webcam site was viewed more than 100,000 times.

The titan arum’s distinctive smell, appreciated by the insects that pollinate it, has given it the colloquial name of “corpse flower”.

Native to Sumatra’s tropical rain forest, it requires a humid climate to grow and even in the wild blossoms very infrequently.

Huge though Basel’s flower is, the tallest specimen ever recorded was about three metres high.

Job interviews: Answer 10 tricky questions

Think carefully before responding to these commonly-asked but tricky questions, during jobs interviews

THE formula for success in job interviews is not written in stone, especially when it comes to tricky questions. For instance if you are being interviewed for a sales position, a potential employer may ask you, “What would you do if a clients hinted at kickbacks?”

How would you respond? Will you appear shocked or deliver your answer with poise? Here are some suggestions on how to answer 10 such questions. Being prepared will give an edge, and not to mention, boost your confidence.

1. Tell us about a difficult relationship in your personal life you have had to cope with?

Don’t go into too many details about what happened, when and where. Don’t condemn the other person or defend yourself. Talk about what you had learnt from the experience.

2. Your boss-to-be is short-tempered, impatient and abrasive. Can you work with someone, of such a temperament?

Working with a short-tempered and very abrasive boss is not easy. Stating that you can effectively work under each and every person, in any and every situation will make you seem over-confident, and unrealistic. Do you get upset if you’re shouted or screamed at? Does it leave you de-motivated or disillusioned for long? If your answer to the latter question is in the negative, let the panel know that unpleasant experiences don’t weigh you down for too long.

3. Since you are in sales, some clients may hint at getting kick-backs. How will you handle such situations, since as a policy we don’t offer bribes?

When asked awkward questions like this, it helps if you plead ignorance. It may be also a test to check your views on bribes. They may ask if you have bribed anyone or what you would do, if you witnessed a government employee accepting a bribe. Tell them your personal experiences or views. Companies always respect individuals who are truthful and who possess a clear (not rigid) opinion on most matters.

4. Why have you fared averagely in Academics?

Many interviewers pay importance to what you have scored in your board examinations. If you had fared averagely and are asked to explain the reason, there’s not much you can do. It would help if you honestly admit that you have only yourself to blame (if that is really the case) and in future you will be clear about your priorities and work hard to achieve your goals.

5. Our industry requires a lot of social interaction with clients - over drinks and at parties. Are you comfortable with smoking and drinking?

Smoking isn’t cool. And many corporate head-honchos are teetotallers. It may be okay to say that you are uncomfortable around smokers and don’t enjoy social drinking. And do you really need to explain why you would not like to smoke or drink? No, it’s a personal choice.

If you’re applying for a job in an advertising or marketing consulting firm you may be asked if you’re okay with working on a tobacco or liquor account. If you feel you can never perform your job well, if the job involves promoting these products, then mention that you want to work on brands, which you are passionate about, and since you are convinced that tobacco or alcohol is injurious to health you may not be the best person to work on an account that involves actively promoting related brands.

6. Since you are a lady, and most of our clients are males, it is highly likely that some clients will try to be over-friendly. How will you handle such situations?

Will you be upset by such behaviour? If you’re confident that you can deal with such clients, only then tell the interviewers how you think you can be professional, yet not interact with clients who you’re uncomfortable with. Honesty is the best policy.

7. Tell us about your weaknesses?

What do you say besides the stereotyed ‘good’ weaknesses – impatience, over-enthusiasm? All of us have weaknesses, but do we need to mention all? And do you weaknesses surface all the time, or on occasions? For instance, while talking about your own traits such as a short temper or abrasiveness you can indicate that you display such traits or behaviour at some times only.

If your weakness is lack of time management, you could say that you are working on it and hope to overcome it over a period of time. Think about this and answer accordingly.

8. You will be replacing a person who we are letting go of. In the few weeks that you spend with him, you have to learn as much about his job so that you can continue doing his work effectively. Do you feel you are okay with this arrangement?

Not an easy situation to be in. While you can try your best to learn as much as you can, what will you do in case your predecessor does not cooperate and tell you all that you need to know? You could point out that you may need your organisation’s support, cooperation and intervention, if need be, in such a circumstance.

9. What if we hired you for one job profile and then change it within weeks?

Your response will depend on your future plans. If you’re interested in a sales job, because you want to pursue a career in marketing, then you’d obviously not want to work in finance or accounts. However, if you’re unsure which area interests you, and would like to learn about the different functions in an organisation, this might be a good opportunity to explore. You should preferably talk about why you prefer some roles or jobs. At the same time try to avoid talking about why you don’t like particular roles.

10. What salary do you expect? What if we told you we cannot pay you for the first three months?

State that since it is the start of your career, learning and experience are more important than salary. If you’re still asked to quote a specific amount give them a general indication on what you would like to earn. Don’t over-quote. If a company states that for whatever reason they won’t pay a salary for the first few months, make sure they are not one of those outfits, which exploit those who need work experience. If the organisation offers a good learning environment, tell them you’re joining the organisation for the valuable experience and you’re confident you’ll soon receive a salary commensurate with your performance.

Cardinal rules

1. Arrive preferably 15 minutes early, so you can relax, freshen up

2. Gauge the company dress code, dress appropriately

3. No unclean hair, sweaty visage or dirty hands with pen marks

4. Keep two copies of your rèsumè, handy

5. Carry a notepad and pen

6. Be poised, confident, but not too relaxed or over-confident.

Supermoon on March 19th may cause natural disasters

On March 19th 2011, the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in almost 20 years, possibly triggering earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other disasters.

The phenomenon, called lunar perigee or Supermoon, happens when the moon reaches its absolute closest point to Earth. On March 19, the natural satellite will be only 221,567 miles away from our planet.

There were Supermoons in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005, and these years had their share of extreme weather conditions, too. Although there are scientific laws that say the moon affects the Earth, it's still ambiguous whether the lunar perigee and natural disasters is coincidence or not.

Two days after online warnings that the Supermoon might trigger disasters, the devastating Japanese tsunami forced everyone to think - could the movement of the moon cause natural calamities?

"Supermoons have a historical association with strong storms, very high tides, extreme tides and also earthquakes," the Daily Mail quoted astrologer Richard Nolle, who first coined the term in 1979, as saying in an interview with ABC radio.

However, scientists dismiss this as utter nonsense.

Dr David Harland, space historian and author, said, "It's possible that the moon may be a kilometre or two closer to Earth than normal at a perigee, but it's an utterly insignificant event."

Professor George Helffrich, a seismologist at the University of Bristol was equally dismissive.

"Complete nonsense. The moon has no significant effect on earthquake triggering. If the moon triggers "big" earthquakes, it would trigger the many of millions of times more "small" earthquakes that happen daily. There is no time dependence of those; hence no moon effect," he said.

According to Dr Roger Musson, of the British Geological Survey (BGS), the devastating earthquake occurred because the Pacific Plate is plunging underneath Japan.

And, this is going to be worse with experts predicting that in the coming years 80 per cent of the population will have spinal or low back pain at some point or the other during their lifetime. "With younger and younger complaining of backache, we are witnessing a paradigm shift in the age group of people suffering from back pain," says Dr Ashok K Saxena, international pain specialist and editor of Indian Journal of Pain. According to experts, apart from poor dietary habits and high stress level, lack of physical activity and sitting in the same posture at a stretch are the main reasons why more and more people are getting a bad back pain.
CONSULT A PAIN SPECIALIST
CHRONIC pain is a disease in itself. The earlier this is treated, the better. According to experts in pain management, ninety percent of the people with back pain just require simple medication and treatment which doesn't cost much. But unfortunately one in five patients with chronic pain in India don't get the right treatment in time mainly because they continue to consult doctors who are unable to arrive at a diagnosis and cure quickly. "Often doctors tell their patients that their pain is in the mind when they are unable to find the source of pain through scans," says Dr P N Jain, President, Indian Society for the Study of Pain (ISSP). According to Dr Jain, such people keep living in acute pain which later turn into chronic pain and require costly procedures. "It is important to move on from an orthopaedician to a pain specialist if the former is unable to pinpoint the source of pain," says Dr Saxena. Pain specialists deal in the management of pain that ranges from migraine to neck pain to cancer pain. According to experts, the approach of a pain specialist in finding a cure for back pain differs from that of an orthopaedician's."Many orthopaedicians choose a conservative approach such as a surgery to cure your back pain conditions. Whereas pain specialists mainly deal in noninvasive management of pain," says Dr Kailash Kothari, spine and pain physician, Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai.
Also, they have an edge over other specialists as their approach is holistic. They are trained in delivering pharmacological medication, precision diagnostic and interventional procedures which are required when conventional methods fail. For instance, studies suggest that more than half the patients who see a doctor for back pain undergo MRI scans. And even though all of them had healthy backs, two out of three of them came back with M.R.I. reports that showed disk problems. In such cases while an orthopaedician usually suggests surgery by trusting the imaging results, pain specialists apply other approaches to be sure about the source of pain generator. "Scans don't tell you the whole story, which is why we try to investigate the sources of pain generator which could be in the muscles or discs or facet joints or spinal canal stenosis through newer diagnostic techniques such as diagnostic injections or nerve block or provocative discography," says Dr Kothari.
TECHNIQUES TO CURE PAIN
THERE are no simple cures for backache, is what most people suffering from it think. Most of us put up with chronic back pain and keep suffering for years thinking that the damage to ourspine is irreversible and we have to learn to live with it. What many of us might not know is the growing number of interventional procedures to treat all kinds of backache problems without a cut in the body. These are an alternative to surgeries, which most patients fear going for and cost a lot. "Ninety per cent of painrelated surgery can be avoided by doing interventional procedures which assure high success rate, have low morbidity, cost less and doesn't require hospitalisation.
Moreover these procedures can be repeated without any morbidity," says Dr Neeraj Jain, senior consultant, pain management, Spine Disc and Pain Clinic. For the first time in India, a set of guidelines on back pain diagnosis and treatment are released by an association of pain specialists. Formulated by ISSP in collaboration with the Brufen Foundation, the protocol and guidelines are formulated to help doctors in providing a welldefined sequence of diagnostic investigations and the line of treatment for specific conditions associated with acute or chronic pain. The guidelines also include a list of advanced interventional procedures which could be done in treating various back ache problems. Here we inform you about a few of them which have helped many in getting rid of their pain.
Vertebroplasty
HAD you been taken to the doctor for a verterbral collapse some years back, you would have taken weeks to recuperate from a major surgery. Today, an expert in interventional procedures takes less than half an hour to fix your broken spine bone. A patient with verterbral collapse, either due to an injury or osteoporosis or bone metastatis, are nowadays treated with vertebroplasty, a non-invasive, quick fix procedure done under local anaesthesia. The doctor first identifies the affected vertebra and subsequently injects a special type of liquid cement material into the centre of the vertebral body. Once set, the cement gives the vertebra extra strength, and gives immediate relief from the pain. The patient is discharged the same evening and is able to walk the next day. "It's an excellent procedure with very low incidence of side effects and morbidities in patients," says Dr Neeraj Jain.
RECOMMENDED FOR: Osteoporotic fractures, vertebral haemangiomas, painful spine bones after spread of cancer, non cancerous painful tumours of spine bones and to augment strength of weak spine bone for other surgical procedures.
Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy (IDET)
IF YOU have been suffering from low back disc pain for more than six months without any relief from exercises, medication and corticosteroid injections, it's time to talk to your doctor about IDET.
IDET is a technique to treat discogenic back pain. It uses a probe inserted into the disc to heat the tissues within the affected disc. Heating the inside of the disc causes the tissues to shrink. It also burns the small nerve fibres in the periphery of the disc. To put it simply it reduces the volume of disc by burning the tissues. "This procedure is developed for the treatment of chronic lower back pain originating in discs," says Dr Choudhury.
IDET is a safe procedure with fewer complications arising in not more than 20 per cent of people going for it. But the most important aspect of this procedure is choosing the right patient.
Patients must fit into the criteria and should show lack of satisfactory improvements with intensive exercise, oral anti-inflammatory medication and physiotherapy. Also, people with weak spine or inflammatory arthritis and people with advanced stages of disc failures are not recommended to go for this procedure.
RECOMMENDED FOR: For patients with symptoms from one or more discs, with tears or fissures in which the nucleus is contained and where a disc is bulging but has not ruptured.
Spinal Cord Stimulation
SPINAL cord stimulation offers hope for those patients who have not experienced success with conventional therapies for spinal pain relief. It's an advanced as well as expensive procedure where a small pulse generator is implanted in the back which sends low-level electrical signal to the spinal cord or to specific nerves to block pain signals from reaching the brain. The procedure is usually done using a local anaesthetic and a sedative. "In simple words it is a pacemaker implantation for spinal cord conditions," says Dr Choudhury.
Only selected patients qualify for this procedure, who have had a successful trial period with the spinal cord stimulator, which takes about 50,000. So, you don't have to take a risk of spending huge money on this procedure which might not show good results for your condition. "It's a very common procedure in western countries but here I do about 5 to 6 procedures in a year. And, my patients haven't come to me for complications yet," says Dr Choudhury. On an average, a person doesn't need the stimulator more than an hour a day.Earlier the stimulator came with a battery life of 2 to 5 years but nowadays they also come with rechargeable batteries.
RECOMMENDED FOR: Spinal cord stimulation is recommended when conservative methods fail to relieve pain. However, in certain conditions it is an ideal treatment: people with failed back or neck surgery syndrome, pain owing to peripheral vascular disease and those in ischaemic pain.

However, this involves risk as the short seller does not own the shares during trading and it is probable that he may default on settlement or delivery. To reduce the risk, SEBI launched the Securities Lending and Borrowing Scheme (SLBS) on the NSE in April 2008.

When a trader short sells shares he doesn't own, it's termed a naked short sale. SLBS allows the trader to borrow shares at the initiation of the short sale. This is called covered short selling and ensures that the trader fulfils his obligation by imposing adequate margins. Under the scheme, the lenders give their idle shares to short sellers for a period ranging from one month to a year, for a fee that is determined by demand and supply. This gives long-term investors an opportunity to earn additional income. SLBS is applicable in the cash market.
However, short-selling can also be done in the derivatives market. An investor can go short on a stock or market index by selling a futures contract or by buying a put option. Futures enable a trader to buy or sell a fixed quantity of stocks or index (defined in terms of market lots) within a specified period, while a put option grants its buyer a right to sell. So if XYZ stock is trading at Rs 100, the futures seller as well as the buyer of a 100 strike put option will gain if the price falls below Rs 100 on the date of settlement.
However, short selling via the derivatives market has some drawbacks compared with doing it through SLBS in the cash market. In the derivatives market, the futures and options (F&O) are traded in market lots, so one has to buy or sell the number of contracts specified in the rulebook. On the other hand, in SLBS, the market lot is one stock. So if a trader wants to sell ITC futures, he needs to trade in a market lot of 1,000 shares. This means a wrong judgment could magnify the losses for the trader. However, by using SLBS, he can choose to short sell only one stock. This safeguards him from the ill-effects of leverage.
Pros and Cons
SLBS helps in exploiting arbitrage opportunities between the cash and derivatives markets. When the futures are trading at a discount to the cash market, one can short sell the shares by borrowing them through SLBS while simultaneously buying the futures contract. Let's assume the stock of ABC is trading at Rs 200 in the cash market and at Rs 180 in the futures market. The market lot is 100 shares, while the market-determined cost of borrowing the shares through SLBS is Rs 5 per share. If we borrow shares in the cash market and sell them, and simultaneously buy the futures contract, it will entail a profit of Rs 2,000 [100 x (200-180)]. Even after paying Rs 500 as borrowing cost, we will generate Rs 1,500 as riskless profit.
Though SLBS seems beneficial, investors have ignored it and all efforts to garner their interest have failed. Between June 2009 and June 2010, there have only been 106 trades, amounting to a meagre Rs 6.42 lakh. The majority of the participants prefer the derivatives segment for short selling. According to experts, the reason for the lack of interest is the high cost associated with SLBS. According to Santanu Syam, Executive Director of Operations at Angel Broking: "A borrower needs to pay the full amount up front, besides additional margins. The sum of all margins works out to as high as 100 per cent or sometimes even more." Also, SLBS is applicable only to stocks that are traded in the F&O segment.
The system forces investors to shell out more than they need to pay in the derivatives segment. For example, if an investor wants to borrow 125 shares of Infosys at a price of Rs 2,600, it would involve a payment of Rs 3.25 lakh, plus the cost of borrowing. Also, margins such as cash margins are as high as 25 per cent of the lending price. So a short seller will need to pay Rs 4.06 lakh. In the derivatives segment, the investor will pay about 40 per cent margin (all inclusive).
Therefore, the same could be short sold with a margin of Rs 1.3 lakh. Short selling is beneficial when the markets are overvalued or when stocks are trading at unwarranted premiums over their fair values. Also, it enhances liquidity and provides stability to the stock markets. "To make the scheme more useful, the regulator should revise the margin requirement and introduce scrips other than those listed in the F&O segment," says Syam. Hopefully, the recent approval by SEBI to allow physical settlement in the derivatives segment will be the impetus that revives SLBS.

Washington, August 3 (ANI): The Earth is in the path to be hit by a wave of violent space weather as early as Tuesday after a massive explosion of the sun, scientists have warned.

Astronomers witnessed the huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of the Earth, the explosion aimed directly towards Earth.
It sent a "solar tsunami" racing 93 million miles across space, which is likely to hit the planet on Tuesday.
The wave of supercharged gas is likely to spark spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.
However, a really big solar eruption could shut down global communication grids and destroy satellites, if it reaches today.
A recent warning by NASA said that Britain could be at the receiving end of widespread power blackouts for a long time after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation "space storm".
"It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun's visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption," said Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Surrey.
"This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes," she added. (ANI)

1. Forgetting manners.
If you use Twitter or you write a blog, you should assume that hiring managers and recruiters will read your updates and your posts. A December 2009 study by Microsoft Corp. found that 79% of hiring managers and job recruiters review online information about job applicants before making a hiring decision. Of those, 70% said that they have rejected candidates based on information that they found online. Top reasons listed? Concerns about lifestyle, inappropriate comments, and unsuitable photos and videos.
"Everything is indexed and able to be searched," says Miriam Salpeter, an Atlanta-based job search and social media coach. "Even Facebook, which many people consider a more private network, can easily become a trap for job seekers who post things they would not want a prospective boss to see."

Don't be lulled into thinking your privacy settings are foolproof. "All it takes is one person sharing information you might not want shared, forwarding a post, or otherwise breaching a trust for the illusion of privacy in a closed network to be eliminated," says Ms. Salpeter, who recommends not posting anything illegal (even if it's a joke), criticism of a boss, coworker or client, information about an interviewer, or anything sexual or discriminatory. "Assume your future boss is reading everything you share online," she says.
2. Overkill.
Blanketing social media networks with half-done profiles accomplishes nothing except to annoy the exact people you want to impress: prospective employees trying to find out more about on you.
One online profile done well is far more effective than several unpolished and incomplete ones, says Sree Sreenivasan, dean of students at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He made the decision early on to limit himself to three social-networking sites: Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. "There is just not enough time," he says. "Pick two or three, then cultivate a presence there."

Many people make the mistake of joining LinkedIn and other social media sites and then just letting their profiles sit publicly unfinished, says Krista Canfield, a LinkedIn spokesperson. "Just signing up for an account simply isn't enough," she says. "At a bare minimum, make sure you're connected to at least 35 people and make sure your profile is 100 percent complete. Members with complete profiles are 40 times more likely to receive opportunities through LinkedIn."
LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter are the three most popular social networking sites for human resources managers to use for recruiting, according to a survey released last month by JobVite, a maker of recruiting software.
3. Not getting the word out.
When accounting firm Dixon Hughes recently had an opening for a business development executive, Emily Bennington, the company's director of marketing and development, posted a link to the opportunity on her Facebook page. "I immediately got private emails from a host of people in my network, none of whom I knew were in the market for a new job," she says. " I understand that there are privacy concerns when it comes to job hunting, but if no one knows you're looking, that's a problem, too."
Changing this can be as simple as updating your status on LinkedIn and other social networking sites to let people know that you are open to new positions. If you're currently employed and don't want your boss to find out that you're looking, you'll need to be more subtle. One way to do this is to give prospective employers a sense of how you might fit in, says Dan Schawbel, author of "Me 2.0" and founder of Millennial Branding. "I recommend a positioning, or personal brand statement, that depicts who you are, what you do, and what audience you serve, so that people get a feeling for how you can benefit their company."
4. Quantity over quality.
Choose connections wisely; only add people you actually know or with whom you've done business. Whether it's on LinkedIn, Facebook or any other networking site, "it's much more of a quality game than a quantity game," says Ms. Canfield. A recruiter may choose to contact one of your connections to ask about you; make sure that person is someone you know and trust.
And there's really no excuse for sending an automated, generic introduction, says Ms. Canfield. "Taking the extra five to 10 seconds to write a line or two about how you know the other person and why'd you'd like to connect to them can make the difference between them accepting or declining your connection request," she says. "It also doesn't hurt to mention that you're more than willing to help them or introduce them to other people in your network."
5. Online exclusivity.
Early last year, Washington's Tacoma Public Utilities posted a water meter reader position on its website. The response? More than 1,600 people applied for the $17.76 an hour position.
With the larger number of people currently unemployed (and under-employed), many employers are being inundated with huge numbers of applications for any positions they post. In order to limit the applicant pool, some have stopped posting positions on their websites and job boards, says Tim Schoonover, chairman of career consulting firm OI Partners.
Scouring the Web for a position and doing nothing else is rarely the best way to go. "When job-seekers choose to search for jobs exclusively online– rather than also include in-person networking–they may be missing out on 'hidden' opportunities," says Mr. Schoonover. "Higher-level jobs are not posted as often as lower-level jobs online. In-person networking may be needed to uncover these higher-level positions, which may be filled by executive recruiters."

European probe Rosetta successfully flies by asteroid: ESA

The European spacecraft Rosetta performed a fly-by of a massive asteroid on Saturday, the European Space Agency said, taking images that could one day help Earth defend itself from destruction.

Racing through the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter at 47,800 kph (29,925 mph), the billion-euro (1.25-billion-dollar) probe flew within 3,200 kms (2,000 miles) of the huge potato-shaped rock, Lutetia.

"The fly-by has been a spectacular success with Rosetta performing fautlessly," ESA said in a statement.
"Just 24 hours ago, Lutetia was a distant stranger. Now, thanks to Rosetta, it has become a close friend," the agency added.

Holger Sierks of Germany's Max Planck Institute, who is in charge of the spacecraft's Osiris (Optical, Spectroscopic and Infrared Remote Imaging System) camera said the more than 400 "phantastic images" showed many craters and details.
"Rosetta opened up a new world which will keep scientists busy for years," he added.
"We have completed the fly-by phase," Rosetta's director of operations Andrea Accomazzo said earlier on the ESA's website from the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany.
The aim of the fly-by of the asteroid, measuring 134 kms (83.75 miles) in diameter, is to measure Lutetia's mass and then calculate its density, knowledge which could one day be a lifesaver, according to ESA scientists.
If a rogue asteroid enters on a collision course with Earth, knowing its density will help the planet's defenders to determine whether they should try to deflect the rock or, instead, blow it up.
As Rosetta is around half a million kilometres from Earth, the probe's signal and images took 25 minutes to be received.
Once widely dismissed as bland lumps of debris left over from the building of the planets, asteroids have turned out to be intriguingly individual.
They are extremely different in shape and size, from just hundreds of metres (yards) across to behemoths of 100 kms (60 miles) or more, and also vary in mineral flavours.
Most measurements suggest Lutetia is a "C" type of asteroid, meaning that it contains primitive compounds of carbon. But others indicate it could be an "M" type, meaning that it holds metals.
New data proving this could rewrite the theory about asteroid classification.
Metallic asteroids are far smaller than Lutetia: they are deemed to be fragments of far larger rocks that, in the bump and grind of the asteroid belt, were smashed apart.
The fly-by comes halfway through the extraordinary voyage of Rosetta, launched in 2004 on a 12-year, 7.1-billion-kilometre (4.4-billion-mile) mission.
One of the biggest gambles in the history of space exploration, the unmanned explorer is designed to meet up in 2014 with Comet 67/P Churyumov-Gerasimenko 675 million kms (422 million miles) from home.
The goal is to unlock the secrets of these lonely wanderers of the cosmos, whose origins date back to the dawn of the Solar System, some 4.5 billion years ago, before planets existed.
To get to its distant meeting point, Rosetta has had to play planetary billiards for five years, using four "gravitational assists" from Earth and Mars as slingshots to build up speed.

1. You and your man have discussed buying a kitten

Or a dog/rabbit/Guinea pig or all of the above! Then put the butter and mix it well with a Big Spoon . Then put the casrola in the Oven for baking upto 30 minutes . Make it out from the oven and then stir it with spoon and serve . It can be delicious meal.

People who have suffered the trauma of being made redundant are not usually in any hurry to repeat the experience. So, in times of recession such as these, it makes sense to consider how secure your next job will be.

If you've been made redundant and are unlikely to find the same type of work again, a career change will be forced on you. Others, meanwhile, will welcome the opportunity to try something new. But which are the safest career choices at a time of economic slowdown? We've drawn up a list of 10 jobs that experts say are most likely to weather the storm.

But first a quick health warning. This recession won't follow exactly the same pattern as previous downturns, while initiatives taken to lessen its impact can have unpredictable consequences. So no list of "safe" jobs will ever be completely accurate.

However, the following should provide an indication of the factors you should look for when seeking job security.

1. Teaching

Children still need to go to school in a recession, and their numbers don't decline in line with economic output. So teachers should enjoy good job security during a downturn.

"While manufacturing and service industries can always reduce staff numbers as their workload falls, demand doesn't fall in schools during a recession so there is less scope for shedding employees," says a spokesman for the Institute for Employment Studies (IES). "That's that's not to say there is never any room for cost-cutting, though," he adds.

2. Working in the NHS

The same logic applies to healthcare workers: just as many people need treatment in a recession as in normal times. And the Government doesn't want to make unemployment worse by cutting jobs in essential services.

"This Government is committed to keeping unemployment down and therefore health, education and social services will continue to hire," says Michael Moran, the chief executive of Fairplace, an "outplacement" agency that helps employers find jobs for redundant employees.

3. Other public service jobs

When you're trying to work out how likely a particular employer is to make staff redundant, ask this question: where do they get their money? Public bodies are funded by the taxpayer via government - local or national - so their income is reliable, says the IES spokesman, and their budgets tend to be decided months or years in advance.

"If an employer's income depends directly or indirectly on consumer spending, there is much more chance that this income will fall significantly in a downturn, with adverse consequences for jobs," he adds. "Organisations that don't depend on consumer spending are more likely to be able to hold on to their staff."

4. Public transport projects

If you're working for a contractor on a new road or railway, for example, you are in the private sector - but the money being spent still comes from the Government, not the consumer. And again, the budgets tend to be made available in advance. So jobs such as this tend to be safe - at least for the duration of the project.

The Government may put more resources into this kind of programme to take up the spare capacity in the economy that occurs in a recession.

5. Home insulation and other 'green' initiatives

The same arguments apply here. Public money may be pumped into environmentally friendly projects - the mass insulation of Britain's housing stock was recently proposed - as a means of boosting the economy and cutting carbon dioxide emissions.

6. Energy

Britain needs a new tranche of power stations to replace ageing nuclear plants and the most polluting fossil-fuel-burning facilities. If building doesn't start soon, the country is expected to face blackouts within a few years. Those who get jobs as engineers, say, working on one of these projects are probably safe until it is complete - and they often last many years.

7. IT

Information technology specialists remain much sought after, says Mr Moran. "Typically, the more specialised the skill, the better," he says, "with the proviso that it's a skill in demand. The fear of all specialists is that the market moves and they find themselves unemployable." And, as with the examples above, the sector in which you are working is as important as the job you do. For example, an IT specialist is likely to have better job security working for the NHS than in a bank.

8. Human resources

"Job security comes from employability - having a skillset in demand by the market," says Mr Moran. HR people with skills in making people redundant are among those who are needed more in the current climate, he adds. And with staff feeling more anxious generally, HR professionals' ability to deal with employee relations is in demand.

"Career coaches - people who can help the unemployed find jobs - are another example of professionals whose skills are wanted at the moment," says Mr Moran.

9. Interim managers

These are short-term employees brought in by a company to manage a particular project or cover for permanent employees who are ill, on maternity leave or away from work for some other reason.

Mr Moran says: "Interestingly, interims are still sought after, as organisations are reluctant to take people onto the permanent payroll. Again, though, you need a skillset in demand."

10. Accountants/finance directors/compliance officers

These are some of the professionals whose services are more in demand in a downturn, as companies pull out all the stops to survive, or as failed firms are wound up or sold on.

"Accountants with insolvency skillsets are much sought after at present," says Mr Moran, "as are finance directors with experience of restructuring debt for companies in danger of breaching their agreements with their lenders."

Compliance/risk officers are another good example, he adds: with the widespread awareness that excessive risk-taking got banks - and so the wider economy - into their current difficulties, companies are stepping up their efforts to monitor potentially disastrous transactions and to comply with the tighter regulations that the financial crisis is bringing.

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons olive oil
3/4 cup hot water or as needed

How to prepare :

In a large bowl, stir together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour and salt. Use a wooden spoon to stir in the olive oil and enough water to make a soft dough that is elastic but not sticky. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is smooth. Divide into 10 parts, or less if you want bigger breads. Roll each piece into a ball. Let rest for a few minutes.
Heat a skillet over medium heat until hot, and grease lightly. On a lightly floured surface, use a floured rolling pin to roll out the balls of dough until very thin like a tortilla. When the pan starts smoking, put a chapati on it. Cook until the underside has brown spots, about 30 seconds, then flip and cook on the other side. Continue with remaining dough.

The shelves once covered an area of more than 5,000 square kilometres but now they are barely 10 per cent of that.
Warwick Vincent of the centre for northern studies at Quebec's Laval University describes the impact of the melting this year as staggering.
He says climate models suggest the most severe changes will take place in the highest northern latitudes, as a starting point for more substantial changes throughout the rest of the planet.

If you're reading this section there are two main reasons. First, there is not enough space on your computers hard drive to download more songs, and you don't want to delete your old songs. Second, you want to listen to music downloads on the road, CD player, MP3 player, or an IPOD. Is this possible? Yes, you can now burn MP3's to CDs and listen to music on the road, on your iPOD, MP3 player, and just about anywhere MP3 format is accepted, and yes save space on your computers hard drive without deleting old music. So how do your burn or copy music? Let's go over some basics first. There are two types of CD discs in the industry for CD burners, CDR and CDRW.
CDR's can be burned only once and our permanent, as CDRW is a CD Rewriteable, and can be re-used over and over. With CD-RW's you can delete old music files and burn new music. CDR's are the cheapest compared to CDRW's. It's important to keep in mind that new recorders accept both forms of CD's, though older recorders only accept CDR's. Also, keep in mind that there are discs that are for music use only, these discs can only be used in stereos style burners at home. These discs may not work with your burner software or CD burner. It's better to go with CDR's or CDRW's.
It's very important that your PCs System Memory (RAM), can send audio data to your recorder. Your processor will perform well anywhere from 64 MB to 128 MB of RAM.
Ok, let's talk about the good stuff and how one knows if they can burn a CD or not from their computer. Most computers today come with a CD burner drive. Sometimes there are two CD discs drives, and some times only one. If you only have one drive then check the labels on the drive to see if it reads CD rewriteable. If you still don't know, then check the computers Users Manual. If you are still having trouble contact the manufacture of your PC and supply them with the computers model number. If you don't have a CD burner drive you can purchase an external writeable CD drive from any electronic store.
There are many CD burner software on the web. Usually when you find good software the tendency is to stay with it. You computer should already come with Windows Media Player or Realone Player, or both. Before you begin to burn music onto your CDs, make sure you have the latest version of Windows Media Player or a Realone Player as the steps below are for the latest version. You can also install Roxio CD Creator, this application will require you to register for a free trial period.
It is very important that you understand, the CDs you burn should not be for resale value, and not to be claimed as your own music. Most songs that you download will be in MP3 format which will be used in any portable devise.

Burn Music using Windows Media Player

Put a blank CD-R or CD-RW in your CD burner tray.
Open Window's Media Player.
You will now see a list of songs on your computer.
Click the COPY TO CD OR DEVISE button.
Select the songs you would like to record.
Click the RECORD button.

Burn Music using Roxio CD Creator

Place a blank CD-R or CD-RW in your CD burner tray.
Open Roxio CD Creator.
Click the MAKE A MUSIC CD button.
Now, click the MUSIC CD PROJECT.
Go to the music folder or drive where your music is placed. (Click the "Select Source file" drop down menu to navigate to the appropriate folder) .
Click the song you would like.
Now, click the ADD button (this will move your selected song to the bottom row).
Do this until you have selected all the songs that you want to burn.
You have the *option to title the CD and the artist.
You can now, click the RECORD button.11. You will now be taken to "Record CD Setup" screen. Select your options and click START RECORDING

Burn Music Using Realone Player

Place a blank CD-R or CD-RW in your CD burner tray.
Open Realone player.
Click the MY LIBRARY button.
Now, click PLAYLIST.
Select the playlist that has your song.
Select the song you want to burn.
Click the BURN CD button.

Copy Music CD's

With a CD burner you also have the option to copy your old CD's or new CDs for personal use. As you can see, a CD burner is a great invention, which allows us to listen to music not only on the computer, but car, train, plane, and while walking. You can sleep, talk, and breathe music!!! You can copy CD's using Windows Media Player, Roxio CD Creator, Realone Player, as well. There are other copying software available on the web. We will only discuss the process of copying CD's using Windows Media Player.

Copy Music CD's using Windows Media Player

Copy Music Files from an Audio CD:

Place the Audio CD in the CD burner tray.
Open Windows Media Player.
Click COPY FROM CD, and then select the drive from which you want to copy. In most cases if your C Drive unless you're on a network with many drives.
Select each music file that you wish to copy. (All files that you have not already copied are selected by default).
Click COPY MUSIC. By default all music files will be stored in the directory "My Documents\My Music" folder.

Pumpkin : 1 Small
Potato : 3 Big size
Flour Fine : 250 gms
Turmeric: ½ Teaspoon
Salt : 1 Teaspoon (as per Taste)
Oil : 200 mltr
Corriender Powder : ½ Teaspoon
Bread Crump : 400 gms

Procedure : First Grate both Potato and Pumpkin (must Peel the Skin First) . Then by hand squeeze the Water from them . So it can be littlebit dry . Then put fine Flour in it . Try to add slowly So it not become hard. Then add turmeric ,Corrinder Powder & Salt . Then Mix properly all the ingredients . Then make small balls . Within that time put the Fry Pan on Oven with Mild Flame . Pour the Oil there to make it heated. Then by Hand press the small balls and make them Flat. Then put the bread crumps on the Flat Cuclets . Then Fry them in light Flame . When it become Golden in Colour put them Out from the Pan and serve it with some sauce or Pickles . You can find it easy ,quick and tasty . Try it now . Whole Procedure can take maximum 30 Minutes time .
